King Crimson - 1974
We created the artwork for King Crimson — 1974 Penn State University, the first release in a four-part series of illustrated King Crimson vinyl editions produced exclusively for Record Store Day. Each cover in the collection focuses on a different member of the band, beginning with guitarist Robert Fripp.
For the first sleeve, we developed a limited-colour portrait of Fripp and his guitar using dense linework, halftone texture and rough graphic marks. Deep navy, coral and off-white give the artwork a print-led character, while oversized typography and the diagonal guitar create a bold composition designed to work at the scale of a record sleeve.
The illustration extends beyond the front cover into the vinyl labels and supporting release artwork, establishing a visual language that can evolve across the remaining three editions while keeping the complete Record Store Day series connected.
